Prosodic Effects of Focus in Dutch Declaratives
نویسندگان
چکیده
Seventeen speakers of Standard Dutch participated in a production experiment that investigated the effects of focus condition (broad, narrow, corrective focus) on the prosodic realization of nuclear accented words in declarative sentences. It was found that focus has an effect on the duration of onset and coda of the nuclear accented syllable as well as on the timing, scaling, and slope of f0 targets and movements. A significant effect exists mainly between broad focus accents on the one hand, and narrow and corrective focus accents on the other. The results are interpreted in terms of phonetic variation, but such that phonetic differences between these two conditions are to a large extent conventionalized.

Variable Prosodic Realization of Verb Focus in Urdu
Urdu/Hindi has SOV default word order and an immediately preverbal default focus position [1, 2]. When focus is syntactically determined relative to the verb, verb focus is difficult to realize by position. We were therefore interested in the interplay between syntax and prosody with respect to verb focus in languages such as Urdu/Hindi and investigated the prosody associated with verb focus in...
متن کاملProsodic Differences Between Declaratives and Polar Questions In Fataluku
The primary goal of the present study is to describe the basic prosodic differences between declaratives and polar questions in Fataluku, an underdocumented Papuan language spoken in the island nation of East Timor. Two robust prosodic differences between statements and questions are observed, namely, the duration of the final vowel and the intonational tune at the right margin of the sentence....
متن کاملHunting Highs and Lows: Acquiring Prosodic Focus Marking in Swedish and Dutch
The acquisition of prosodic focus marking has primarily been investigated for non-tonal languages; little is known about how this skill is acquired in languages where pitch is used to mark both sentence and word-level contrasts. In the current study we compare the acquisition of prosodic focus marking between a tonal language, Central Swedish (hereafter CS), and a non-tonal language, Dutch. Our...
متن کامل"Either" as a Focus Particle
Many analyses of initial coordination are based on the view that elements like either, both and neither are conjunctions. Such a view, however, leaves many questions unanswered with respect to the prosodic and syntactic structure of these constructions and their interpretation. This study argues that English either and its Dutch counterpart of are focus particles rather than conjunctions. This ...
متن کاملProsodic and Segmental Cues to the Perception of Grammatical Number in Two Limburgian Dialects of Dutch
This paper investigates the perception of grammatical number in two Limburgian dialects of Dutch, Roermond and Weert, as a function of focus and intonational context. In these dialects, number can be marked segmentally or prosodically. The Roermond dialect, but not the Weert dialect, appears to neutralize the prosodic distinction outside the focus constituent in IP-internal syllables. We explai...
